Bacalar is a village well known for its main attraction Laguna de los 7 Colores  ‘the 7 colours lagoon’, although my monkey eyes could only count six.

The pueblo was founded in 415 AC, it was colonised by the Spaniards in 1543 and repetitively assaulted by pirates during the 17th century. Despite its ancient origins, the village itself does not have much to offer. Today it is a poor community with a few restaurants and hostels.

Go there to get out of the crowd and spend few quiet days in the nature. Enjoy the clear and colourful water of the lagoon, visit the nearby Cenote Azul and have a look at the tiny castle ‘Fuerte de San Felipe’.
